2009 Students of the Year

Kaylynn Buckner

Kaylynn is a 4th grader at Northmoor Elementary. She will be 10 years old in February. She has loved music and dance since she could stand on her own two feet! This will be her 7th year at Dance Expressions, which includes 2 years on the Tiny Expressions (one year as an Officer) and this year on the Mini Expressions dance team.

Last year was also Kaylynn’s first year to participate in Creative Dance Productions solo competitions and pageant, which she won 2nd runner up. Kaylynn loves all her dance classes, but especially enjoy’s Jazz and Hip Hop. . .although she is branching out to Lyrical this year.

Kaylynn loves science and animals and her hobbies, including dance, are horseback riding/horse camp, riding her bike, playing on the computer and camping. She’s always making up dance routines in her room either by herself or with friends. Kaylynn's dream is to become a dance teacher just like Miss Lori. Dance is her life!

Lauren Verdes

Lauren is 11 years old and in the 6th grade at St. Christopher School, where she is on the A honor roll. Her favorite subjects in school are art, gym, and science.

She started dancing ballet at age four at Miss Renee’s. She then went on to gymnastics at Gem City, and was asked to be on the competition team. However, her love was dance, and so she went back to dancing again, this time with Dance Expressions. This will be her fifth year dancing with Miss Lori. Lauren was on the Tiny and Mini Expressions Dance Teams and was an officer last year. Her officer line finished in first place at the CDP Nationals and received an Ultimate Star rating. Lauren also performed in solo competitions last year for the first time and loved it! She was very excited as a newcomer to place in the top 10 at the CDP pageant competition. She will be dancing as a 6th grader on the Vantasia Dance Team this coming year. Lauren’s favorite dance is jazz and she discovered lyrical as well last year.

Lauren’s hobbies beyond dance are playing on her computer, art, soccer, and gymnastics. Lauren hopes to be a dance teacher someday. She also loves animals and may even pursue veterinarian school when she gets older.

Christen Ruff

Christen is 16 years old and will be a junior at Butler High School. This will be her third year on the Butler Kickline, as well as her second year serving as an officer. Last year, she was part of the gold medal winning officer line and a member of Kickline her freshman year when Kickline received the gold medal in their jazz routine at State/Nationals.

She started dancing at the age of three and has been dancing with Dance Expressions since it first opened 12 years ago. She has participated in solo competitions for four years, receiving 4th runner up at pageant in the senior division last year. She has been a member of the Mini Expressions and Vantasia, serving one year as Co-Captain. Christen's dance background includes ballet, pointe, jazz, lyrical, hip hop, pom, kick, and contemporary. Although she enjoys all kinds of dancing, her favorites are lyrical and contemporary.

Her hobbies include dancing, Pilates, hanging out with friends, shopping, relaxing by the pool, watching SYTYCD over and over :) annnd more dancing! She also enjoys being creative and is very excited to choreograph two younger girls solos this year. Christen plans on attending college after high school and is currently interested in studying design.
